The McMichaels and Bryan were sentenced to life in prison for the killing of 22-year-old Ahmaud Arbery, who was shot in the chest and abdomen on February 23, 2020. The pair chased Arbery through the neighborhood, where he had been jogging. They thought that the youth was a thief and matched a description of someone caught on surveillance video at a home under construction. However, Arbery had been there before, but had not taken anything.

A video of the shooting surfaced months later. Protests erupted across the U.S., but the local prosecutor deemed the shooting justified. The McMichaels claimed that Arbery had been suspicious and was attempting to commit a crime. They also claimed that Arbery had spoken about several break-ins in the neighborhood, but there was no evidence that connected him to the thefts.

Travis McMichael was sentenced to life in prison and an additional 10 years on federal hate crime charges. The sentence was increased by 10 years after the jury found that the shooter had committed a federal crime and a hate crime. He was also found guilty of illegally using a firearm and kidnapping the victim.

Travis and Greg McMichael were sentenced to 35 years in prison for killing Ahmaud Arbery on October 19, 2016. The two men, who had been friends for years, were on a jog when the men pulled over and began shooting at him. Fortunately, the video of the attack soon became public. The three men were later arrested. Travis McMichel fatally shot Arbery, and the three men had a fair trial. Greg and Travis spoke to the courtroom and the parents of Ahmaud Arbery.

The three men were convicted of the murder of Ahmaud Arbery, a 25-year-old Black man. They had chased him down the street and eventually shot him with a shotgun. They were accompanied by a neighbor.

Prosecutors tried to find out why the men killed Arbery. A social media analysis performed by the FBI uncovered messages in which the men discussed race. Additionally, former co-workers and neighbors testified that the McMichaels had expressed negative views toward Black people. However, the defense argued that the men were not motivated by racism.

Ahmaud Arbery was known as a nice guy. He often encouraged teammates and had a great laugh. He even tried out for the Brunswick Pirates football team. He was a slender linebacker and was a fan of head coach Jason Vaughn.

Despite his criminal past, the Arbery family says he was a good man and had a big heart. He had served five years probation on a weapons charge and was on probation for shoplifting in 2018. In 2017, an officer from Glynn County attempted to tase Ahmaud, but the officer was unable to locate a weapon. The officer said they were in a neighborhood known for drug use. Arbery told the officer that he was not carrying a gun because he was on his day off.

Despite the racial and ethnic makeup of the protestors, many of them were peaceful protesters. They were organized by the Transformative Justice Coalition and had a table with water and snacks. Occasionally, the crowd would break out in cheers of “Justice for Ahmaud!”
