For many people, the name Doug Wright conjures up images of lawyers with their heads in the clouds. But this Tampa attorney is no ordinary lawyer. He’s a member of the Bob Graham Center’s Council of Advisors, a partner at Holland & Knight, and a father of three. A native of Florida, Wright grew up in the United States Navy, serving as a radar technician.

Later, he was promoted to executive partner, in charge of the firm’s HR department and daily operations. He also served on several boards, including the Securities and Exchange Commission. He also proudly displayed pictures of his three children. He served as an emeritus trustee of the Levin School of Law.

Wright attended the University of Florida as a walk-on nose guard. He was considered one of the strongest players on the Gator team and bench-pressed 500 pounds. He then attended law school and joined Holland & Knight in Bradenton. Eventually, he settled in Tampa. While working at the firm, he was active in community service, serving on the boards of the Bob Graham Center for Public Service, Rebuilding Together Tampa Bay, and the United Cerebral Palsy Association of Tampa Bay.
He was a radar technician in the u.s. navy
After serving in the U.S. Navy for three years as a radar technician, Wright decided to pursue a career in the corporate world. Doug earned a B.S. in mechanical engineering from Virginia Tech and an M.B.A. from the University of North Carolina. He is also a licensed pilot, having earned his license when he was 19 years old. But before he found success in the corporate world, Wright fought for his beliefs.
Despite his military background, Wright’s motive for the attack is a complicated one. He hoped to use his terrorism conviction to attack corporate America. He had also pleaded guilty to an attempted bridge blowup a few months earlier. The Brecksville-Northfield High Level Bridge crosses the Cuyahoga River south of Cleveland. Wright was chatting with a FBI informant as he planned the attack. He subsequently bought fake C4 as part of a sting operation, enabling investigators to catch him before the he had even started the attack.
He was a prominent lawyer
For almost two decades, Doug Wright served as the human resources director of Holland & Knight, a law firm in Tampa. He also led the firm’s marketing, IT, and operations departments. Wright was also active in many civic organizations, including the United Cerebral Palsy of Tampa Bay and Rebuilding Together Tampa Bay. When asked about his involvement in the various organizations, he would happily tell colleagues about his many volunteer hours and his commitments.
Although the cause of Wright’s death has not been determined, the law firm said he likely suffered a cardiac problem while swimming. Wright practiced at Holland & Knight for most of his career, beginning his work there in 1987. He specialized in tax litigation and corporate and business planning. The firm’s managing partner worked closely with Wright. While his death has sparked controversy, the firm has defended Wright’s professional career.
